Where and what is Kwandwe?

Kwandwe is a Private Game Reserve in South Africa

Why is a qualified Vet employed?

A qualified vet is employed to try and guarantee the animals safety and is on standby for an emergency, they also note the dosage of drugs and monitor to make sure no overdoses happen.

How much does a hunt cost?

Between 10,000 and 20,000

How long does it take for the drugs to take effect?

Depends on the size of the animal and the dosage injected. An example for a white Rhino was twenty minutes.

Why is the animal at risk each time it is darted?

An accidental overdose could occur and kill the animal, the element of stress can also have an unhealthy or even fatal impact and whilst the tranquilizer kicks in the animal acts as if it is drunk and stumbles around and during this process injuries could happen, the could fall on a tree stump and impale themselves, tip and break a bone, anything is possible.

Why are microchips inserted into the rhino’s horn?

For mainly two reasons. One being so they can track the creature and if it hurts itself they know where to go to find it. Two being that if the animal is poached and it’s horns or whatever the microchip is inserted in is taken by poachers the people who protect the animals can track the horn on the black market. If poachers also see the microchip they might decide it would be too hard to kill the animal and remove the microchip so they might go in search of another.

How much are horns worth on the black market?

Half a milion per kilogram.

How many animals could be shot each night before Green hunting?

Two hundred animals could be shot or killed each night before green hunting.

Why is Green Hunting controversial?

Green Hunting is a hot and cold topic. On one hand, it is a good and much safer and life saving way to hunt animals but on the other, the animals go under and extreme amount of stress and it harms them. Many people beleive that animals should never be hunted for the thrill  of it. While others ride on the beliefs that killing animals for fun is perfectly ok.

Do you think that Green Hunting is an effective conservation strategy? Why?

Yes, because even though it costs an extreme amount of money, it still saves an aminals life. Also the animals that are used as faulse game are cared for and tracked, this makes them undesirable targets for poachers.
